Abstract:

Physics invites us to see the world differently. Why do objects move the way they do? What are space and time? What happens inside a black hole? And why does nature become so strange in the quantum world? In this lectures, we will journey from familiar experiences in everyday life to some of the most surprising ideas in modern physics. We will explore Einstein’s view of gravity and spacetime, the mysteries of black holes, and the quantum description of matter. Finally, we will look at one of the great challenges of contemporary physics: bringing gravity and quantum theory together, and the role that string theory may play in this search. Along the way, we will see how physics reveals unexpected connections between the ordinary world around us and the deepest structure of the universe.

Bio: Sung-Soo Kim is a professor in the School of Physics at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). He received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Florida and held research positions at Chalmers University of Technology, Université Libre de Bruxelles, and the Korea Institute for Advanced Study (KIAS) before joining UESTC. His research focuses on string theory, supersymmetric gauge theories, and mathematical physics. His work explores the rich interplay between string theory and quantum field theory, with particular emphasis on strongly coupled supersymmetric theories, brane constructions, and their underlying mathematical structures
