PhD opportunity on tropical cyclones and Kilimanjaro’s glaciers at the University of Innsbruck (Austria)

We are looking for a PhD student to join our project entitled “The Influence of Tropical Cyclones on Kilimanjaro’s Glaciers,” which is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) for three years and hosted by the Department of Atmospheric and Cryospheric Sciences at the University of Innsbruck (PIs Emily Collier and Lindsey Nicholson).

The project investigates the influence of tropical cyclones and intraseasonal atmospheric variability (i) on moisture transport and precipitation variability in Equatorial East Africa and (ii) on high-elevation meteorological conditions on Kilimanjaro and associated impacts on glaciers in this region.

The successful candidate will have a geoscientific background (MSc or equivalent) in atmospheric, climate or cryospheric sciences (or a related field), as well as an interest in atmospheric and glacier surface energy and mass balance modelling, machine learning and programming. Aside from the project work, the candidate will enroll in the PhD program Atmospheric Sciences and be a member of the multi-disciplinary Innsbruck Doctoral College Mountain Climate and Environment.

The PhD position is funded for 36 months according to the FWF salary scheme. The employment can start at the earliest on 1 October 2023.
