Shaban Muhammad, an ambitious student from the Division of Applied Science (DNAS) at Duke Kunshan University, showcased his research prowess and was awarded the prestigious “Best Poster in Basic Science” at the 12th Asia-Korea Conference held in Shanghai on November 16th. His winning poster summarized his Summer Research Scholars (DKU SRS) Project that detailed the examination of the role of a cancer-causing gene, DEK, in human bone cancer cells by leveraging CRISPR/Cas9 genetic editing technology.
The conference proved to be an illustrious gathering, themed “Beyond Borders: Shaping the Innovative Future Together,” that featured prominent scholars, researchers, and students from all over Asia. In a melting pot of knowledge and collaboration, Muhammad had the privilege of not only receiving recognition for his hard work but also of participating in discussions and panels like “Coffee-chat-connect,” where he engaged with field experts and received valuable feedback.
Under the guidance of Professor Ferdinand Kappes and with the supervision of Yewei Liu, a PhD candidate at XJTLU, Muhammad conducted his summer research which culminated in his notable achievement at the conference. The event also served as a celebration for the DKU CReAtE Lab team. The team, including the mentor, Professor Eunyu Kim, and teammates Seonui Jeong and Mengwei Cheng, gained recognition as Professor Kim was lauded with the “Overseas Scientist of the Year” award, accompanied by a presidential commendation, for her exceptional research in plant molecular biology.
The conference’s academic accomplishments were complemented by a field trip around Shanghai, which allowed Muhammad and his peers to delve into locations of cultural and historical importance in Korean culture, as well as the longstanding relations between Korea and China. It was an opportunity for our student to forge new connections and lay the foundation for future scientific collaboration steeped in mutual cultural respect.
Representing Duke Kunshan University at this esteemed international forum was more than an honor; it was a rich and educational experience that has further ignited Muhammad’s passion for contributing to the fields of cancer research, global health, and sustainable agricultural practices. With continued support from his mentors, Muhammad is on a steadfast path to making meaningful advancements in academia and beyond.
